Donington WSBK: ‘My season starts now’ – Sykes

Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes is back to winning ways and after a record breaking World Superbike double victory at Donington Park, the Yorkshireman is adamant that his season starts from today.

He is a tad disappointed that it has taken him and his crew four rounds to find a setting that works on his ZX-10R, after his team turned a corner with the bike at the last round at Imola. The Huddersfield rider now resides third in the overall championship standings, but still 102 points adrift of team-mate, and title rival Jonathan Rea.

Sykes is desperate to claw back some valuable points to get his season back on track again, and he is certainly going in the right direction, as today he equalled Carl Fogarty’s total of six race wins at the Leicestershire track. But not only that the Kawasaki man is the first rider to win three consecutive double victories at the circuit, something which makes him one very happy rider this evening.

“I had no idea how I did so well. At Imola we worked hard with the bike and we turned a corner and we put those settings to practice here. We didn’t do much to the bike and we turned up with an acceptable package and I dug deep and tried to make it happen,” said Sykes, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track.

“All the guys were going very fast on the race tyres and we saw it coming and the times we were doing on the race tyres I knew could break the circuit and lap record. I took the opportunity - but we need to claw some points back and see where we end up.

“Unfortunately my season starts from now, but it is four rounds too late but we will keep working and anything is possible, and we have a strong belief that we can work in a really good way now.”
