Donington WSBK: Sykes obliterates lap record on way to pole

Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes stormed his way to his fifth pole position of the year and did it in emphatic style, obliterating his own World Superbike outright lap record at Donington Park.

A super impressive 1’26.712, meant that he went three tenths quicker than his best lap from 2015, and he has dominated the weekend so far, and looks on course for his seventh consecutive victory at the track.

Aruba.it Ducati’s Chaz Davies certainly made up for the time he lost after his bike went up in flames in FP2, but was nearly one second slower than Huddersfield’s finest. But a 1’27.572 puts his Panigale second on the front row.

The battling Brits are joined by Ioda Racing’s Lorenzo Savadori who rounds up row one, with a time that was 0.02s slower than the Welshman. The second row is headed up by the reigning champ, Jonathan Rea who was one tenth shy off the Ducati of Davies.

The Isle of Man resident is joined by Davide Giugliano and Jordi Torres. British rider, Leon Camier is sandwiched between two American’s, with the MV Agusta racer starting race one from P8, with Nicky Hayden beginning row three with MotoAmerica champion, Cameron Beaubier completing the row. Fores and Abraham will start race one in P10 and P11.

In Superpole one it was Hayden and Fores who made it through to the final qualifying session after decent 1’28.589 and 1’28.743 times respectively. The American’s Honda team-mate, Michael Van Der Mark just missed out on a place within the top two and will start the first race this afternoon in P12.

Milwaukee BMW’s Josh Brookes really tried to pull himself into an automatic Superpole two spot, but he was caught up on track and was stuck behind Szkopek whilst he was on his fastest lap. He was unable to do another hot time as the chequered flag appeared, but he did put down his quickest lap of the weekend with a 1’29.029, and he once again starts on the fifth row for race two.

Local rider, Alex Lowes was missing from proceedings, as the injuries he sustained during the last round at Sepang proved too much for the Derby based racer. The former BSB champ is still recovering from a broken collarbone. Also Grillini Racing’s Sheridan Morias was declared unfit by medical staff, and had to sit out race one after an earlier crash.
