Donington WSBK: Sykes targets fifth double in a row

Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes is aiming for his tenth World Superbike victory in a row, as he targets doing the double for a fifth consecutive year at Donington Park.

The Yorkshireman was lapping consistently in the 1’27’s, and was second fastest on the combined free practice timing-screens at his local circuit. Sykes was only 0.122 seconds slower than his team-mate and championship rival, Jonathan Rea.

Sykes has won every race here in the series since 2013 and is currently third in the overall championship standings, with only one point separating him from Ducati’s Chaz Davies.

His plan is to make the best of the new tyres during qualifying to make it on to pole position, but he knows just how hard his team-mate will be pushing to clinch the win from Sykes on Saturday and Sunday. The former champ also thinks that Rea’s crash in the first free practice session shows just how hard he is trying at the Leicestershire track.

“Plan A is to go out and win both races but that always is. We are settling in nicely and the bike is working well. There is no secret that my team-mate is out to try and do his best and put a stop to that and that is why I think he crashed today and run on in the second one and he is definitely pushing,” said Sykes at the track.

“He has had a lot of success and now I think this is something he is very keen to achieve. Tomorrow we need to personally step our game up a little bit and go racing. Looking at the times he is good on the lap times and consistency is somewhere there and I don’t think my consistency is not too shabby. So tomorrow my focus is to make the best of the new tyres and from there see what happens.”
