Dunlop and Sheils share the Cookstown 100 honours

Derek Sheils and William Dunlop shared the honours today at the Cookstown 100 road races taking two wins each. Sheils, aboard his Cookstown BE Racing Suzuki, had victories in both the Superbike races, while Dunlop continued his unbeaten record winning both the Supersport races.

John Burrows’ team had more success when youngster Malachi Mitchell-Thomas came home first in the Supertwin race.

The opening Supersport race which was carried over from Friday saw Derek McGee control the opening laps from the front closely chased by Mitchell-Thomas, Dunlop was back in fifth place on lap one but quickly made his way on to the back of the leading duo who had started to gap the others, by mid point he moved to the front but on the final lap the red flags came out when Mitchell-Thomas crashed unhurt but his bike suffered to much damage and he had to sit out the second 600 race. The race was declared on the positions at the end of lap four meaning Dunlop took the victory by three seconds from Kneen and McGee third.

Making the most of his pole position Sheils flew into the lead in the feature open race, from the off there was no doubt who the winner was going to be as he opened a substantial gap on his closest rival Derek McGee, at the flag there was a ten second gap with Mitchell Thomas snatching second place from McGee when he made a mistake and ran wide with Dan Kneen on the Martrain Racing superstock Yamaha R1 also benefiting from McGees error taking the final place on the podium.

Earlier in the day Sheils won the Open non championship race leading from start to finnish. Derek McGee put up a gallant effort in the first three laps but Sheils stamped his authority gradually opening a gap of five seconds at the flag, McGee was followed across the line by the impressive new boy Malachi Mitchell-Thomas who hung onto third by a margin of two tenths of a second from Dan Kneen.

Supersport race two and again William Dunlop left himself a bit of work to do dropping to third place behind leader Derek McGee and pole man Paul Jordan in the opening lap. It didn’t however take him long to get things back under control as he quickly made up lost ground and took to the front taking the flag some three seconds ahead of McGee and third place Dan Kneen.

Paul Jordan easily one the 125/Moto 3 race beating Adam Mclean to the flag by four seconds with Sam Wilson third.

The Supertwins was a close battle between Cookstown BE team mates Derek Sheils and Malachi Mitchell-Thomas until Sheils made an error in the second to last lap dropping him back to fifth place, Mitchell-Thomas took the win second was James Cowton and Michal Dukoupil third.
