Dunlop brothers clean up at rain-hit 2016 Skerries

Michael and William Dunlop cleared up at this year’s Skerries road races, winning both the Open and Supersport races but the grand final was called off after the heavens opened.

Riding his MD Racing Superstock BMW Michael Dunlop won the open rac., Derek Sheils, Cookstown BE Racing Suzuki, set the early pace taking to the front from the start and leading the race  until the final lap when Dunlop, who had fought his way back into contention swooped, beating the Dublin man to the flag by 0.5 seconds.

Brother William completed the top three on his NMB Yamaha R1 with Alan Bonner fourth, local man Michael Sweeney fifth and Derek McGee rounding out the top six.

The Supersport race was a closely-fought affair between William Dunlop (IC Yamaha R6) and Derek McGee (NW Racing Yamaha R6). Dunlop led from start to finish but had to work hard to stay in front of the charging McGee with only 0.3 seconds separating them as they crossed the line. Dunlop maintained his authority in the National Supersport class with Michael in third place.

Michael Sweeney was the winner in the Supertwin race with Derek Sheils second less than a second behind and Paul Jordan third.

Adam McLean won the 125 race and Davy Morgan took the top step in the 250 class.

The Irish weather took its toll yet again, after a few delays throughout the day due to rain the Grand Final was called off when a late afternoon downpour saturated the circuit and time ran out for it to dry sufficiently.
