EMRA round four: Weekend race report and results

Perfect timing was the key at the East Midland Racing Association championship round at Mallory Park on Sunday, when , just as the last bike returned to the paddock after a packed twenty-race programme, the black clouds which had been looming over the circuit released their contents on to the track. Andy Carpenter was the winner of that last race – the Allcomers race, and doubly eager to win it on a dry track having missed out by nine thousandths of a second to Stuart Mccann in the first race when the damp conditions possibly favoured McCann’s Triumph.

Ryan Oliver started the day’s proceedings with a convincing victory in the Roadstocks race on the Revolution BMW, beating Michael Leeson’s KTM with Arthur Oliver’s triumph third overall and first 600 – European bikes 1-2-3, and then repeated the performance in the second roadstock race. Reigning EMRA Supersport champion John Lea ran away with both Supersport/Superbike races, beaten Dylan Roberts by thirteen seconds in race one, with Andy Capenter just seconds down in third, and finishing even further ahead of second placed Carpenter in race two with Roberts third.

Sidecar handicap races have provided great sport at Mallory Park before, but self-imposed handicaps made for interesting racing on this occasion. Nev Jones stalled on the line in the opening race, and spent the first half of the race working his way up to fourth place, and it looked for a while as though he might be able to pull back the gap on third-placed Roy Hawkins, while Lee Crawford was racing away from Lee Eastell at the head of the field, but slowed towards the end of the race.

Race two saw Jones give himself another handicap by spinning early on, dropping to sixth place, but the big surprise was seeing Lee Crawford and Ashley Moore come round in eighth place at the end of lap one. Next time round the Durham team were in sixth, and by lap four were third while Lee Eastell and Roy Hawkins were making the most of the chance to run at the front. On lap six Crawford edged past Hawkins for second as they crossed the startline, and the challenge was on to see if Eastell could be caught. Two laps later they were nose to tail, but it took the rest of the lap for Crawford to take the lead and then set the fastest lap of the race pulling away to take the win by 1.6 seconds.

Paul westerdale is now the only EMRA racer to have a 100% record after eight races, but it didn’t look as though he would keep that record when he was only seventh in the Lightweight race at the end of lap one, and even less so as he was losing time for the next two laps, but as the track dried Paul started to speed up and after Andy Gill had captured the lead from David Ince on the fourth lap, Westerdale was lapping three seconds faster than anyone else in the race snatching the lead on lap six and extending the lead to fifteen seconds at the end.

Nigel Palmer had a perfect record, six wins out of six at the start of Sunday’s 125cc event, and he took an early lead from Gavin mills, but then dropped it at the hairpin (a favourite spot on the day – especially for race leaders) to let Mills take the lead, but as the race went on Joe Thompson challenged and for the last four laps of the race there was absolutely nothing between the two leaders, Thompson eventually getting the win by 0.4seconds.

In the second race Thompson went out early on, and Palmer and Mills were never more than half a second apart until Palmer came through alone on lap nine with Mills bike sounding bad, and unable to finish the race.

The Ducati Desmo Due championship came to EMRA for the first time and provided good racing, Martin Cox winning both races from Matthew Lawson, although Dallas Lawson looked set for the win in race one until he tipped off at the hairpin while coming under increasing pressure from Cox. In race two it was the second place man who fell as the pressure increased (again, at the hairpin), Harrison Warren having closed right up on Cox for first place before hitting the ground leaving Cox with a comfortable lead over Lawson.

Steven Bates won both rookie races on the Tubes BMW, ahead of the Shaw twins, Matthew taking second an William third both times and extending his lead in the championship.

Alec Gilfillan ran away with the first Earlystock race, but on a wet track the GSX1100 is a bit of a handful and it was Jason Fisher who took the second race (although some might say his CBX1000 is just as tricky to race in the wet – and just as heavy to pick up.)
