Haslam switches to Bournemouth Kawasaki for BSB 2017

Leon Haslam will remain in the MCE British Superbike series for 2017 and partner Luke Mossey in the Bournemouth Kawasaki team next season after signing a deal direct with Kawasaki UK.

Fresh from a double podium at the Japanese Superbike finale at Suzuka, Haslam says he wants to stay and fight for the championship that he so narrowly lost to Shane Byrne last month on a package he now knows and with a year’s worth of data in the bag.

Haslam did have a couple of options outside of the UK, particularly with the Pedercibi Racing team with whom he scored a fifth place at the Qatar finale, but felt his best opportunities lie in BSB.

“To have a second year in British Superbikes with Kawasaki was my priority. This year was all a bit last minute, learning the tracks plus a new bike but continuing for a second year with the great relationship we have built up was a no-brainer,” Haslam told BSN from Suzuka.

“It was a must really, given the ties we have now got in Japan. I will have my own crew chief and mechanics and Dave Allenby will look after the engines and electronics. They will only work with me, that will be their job which is one of the stipulations I made after this year.”

Haslam won’t limit his activities to the UK however and will also ride again at Suzuka for the works Kawasaki team, plus there will be some opportunities to ride in World Superbikes and maybe also in MotoAmerica if the timings are right.

“Kawasaki want me to be involved with the Suzuka effort, which is incredibly positive, and there will some other rides too in World Supers and MotoAmerica, as well as testing for the faxctory, but obviously my main objective is to win the title next year.”
