Hutchinson awarded prestigious Torrens Trophy

Ian Hutchinson was rewarded for the courage and determination that saw him return to race winning glory at last year’s Isle of Man TT races as he was presented with the Torrens Trophy at a glittering luncheon party at the plush RAC club in London’s Pall Mall.

The Bingley Bullet had created a sporting milestone when he became the first rider in the festival’s history go win five races in a week, but a three months after that epic success in June 2010 Hutchinson was fearing that his career was over when he sustained horrific leg injuries in a Supersport race at Silverstone.

Hutchinson had to argue with surgeons not to amputate his left leg and his grit won the day, not to mention a string of 30 operations that finally same him back on track with a victory in the Macau Grand Prix a prelude to his winning treble in last year’s TT.

He struck a late deal to ride for Keith Flint’s Yamaha team and rewarded them with a Supersport double and he added to that with a super stock victory for PBM Kawasaki as he increased his winning tally on the Island to eleven.

“I kept a lot of it ( the extent of the injuries) quiet but there was horrible spell of days and nights,” reflected Hutchinson who added: “you have an injury but it is a bit like a hangover and you say you will never drink again, but I wanted to race again. In 2015 I was due to ride an MVbut it didn’t come together and the Keith (Flint) agreed to let me ride his bike a week before the event - after three laps of practice we came out and won.”

Hutchinson will be back for for more this June riding for Tyco BMW, on which he begins testing next month, and again with flint’s team aiming high and not ruling out the chance of another five!

And on a big day for motorcycling at the RAC club Leicestershire businessman John Bloor, OBE, was presented with the Diamond Jubilee Trophy in recognition of his work in the field of automotive transport in the rebirth and growth of the iconic Triumph brand, underlining the work of him and his team to build the best of British in a highly competitive market place.
