‘I had to calm down on my last stint’ says Suzuka winner Lowes

Britain’s Alex Lowes had to stop himself from chasing after old mate Leon Haslam during his last stint at the Suzuka Eight-Hours as he had a one-lap advantage in the lead and had been told by the Factory Yamaha team to keep it steady.

Lowes was tasked with the last hour of the race and had plenty in hand over the final 60 minutes but started to get giddy when he came of pitlane and the works Kawasaki rider zipped through his vision.

"It was funny because as I came out of the pits Leon came past me on the start-finish straight, he was obviously in second place," Lowes told Bikesport News when he landed yesterday.

"I was following him as I did my first lap – and they had told me to ride around, not to do anything that would stop us from winning, don’t crash, do around 2’12-ish – it was a nine zero and I thought ‘oh shit, I need to calm down’ from trying to catch Haslam.

"It was good for me, because it made me calm down a bit and then I was behind Kagayama for a bit and that took my mind off things, I thought I’d just follow him for a bit and it was a nice easy pace, which took my mind off how long was to go.

"Once I’d got past him, I just told myself to enjoy it. How many times are you going to get to ride the factory Yamaha, around Suzuka, in the dark, with a two-minute lead, just bringing the bike back around to win it? It’s obviously a mega position, so once I got to the last 15 minutes I just had to enjoy it."
