Imola WSBK: ‘Breathing space’ for Rea in title chase

Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea goes in to this weekend’s Imola World Superbike with a two-race margin at the top of the championship table but is well aware of how quickly big leads can disappear.

Rea has won six of the opening eight races on the ZX-10R and the 50-point gap over Leon Haslam is second place is some welcome breathing space. He believes that Chaz Davies will again be fast on Ducati’s home turf and that team-mate Tom Sykes is not to be discounted.

“Being ahead gives us a bit of breathing space but it’s only round four. We’ve seen in the past how quickly gaps are swallowed up – we’ve seen them disappear in no time but it’s nice to have that; to be honest it’s just nice to win races,” said Rea, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“I’m excited for Imola; it’s a cool track. It’s good fun to ride – Tom had a double there two years ago and Chaz was strong last year and I was good on the Honda, but although we know the Kawasaki works well there I still expect Chaz to be fast again. I’m looking forward to the battle.”
