Imola WSBK: Sykes concerned with Ducati pace on hard tyre

Former World Superbike Champion Tom Sykes is concerned that Chaz Davies was not only able to win at will over two World Superbike races at Imola this weekend but that he was able to do it using both the soft and hard Pirelli options.

Sykes believes that using the harder SC1 rear should be Kawasaki territory all day long but Davies today was able to leave the building using it while the Huddersfield man was again in a battle with team-mate Jonathan Rea for the podium spots.

“Obviously, I’m not happy with third but you have to be realistic and happy because even when we are struggling, we’re on the podium so this is a positive. I will keep trying and keep smiling. I know where I would like to go with the bike and hopefully we can go in that direction as soon as possible,” said Sykes, speaking at the track.

“I could probably tell you the exact reason why but anyone who is technically well-minded knows exactly how they have improved. Chaz is riding awesomely and the team have given him the tools to go racing. Inside Kawasaki, there is a mixed direction at the moment. There are limitations but I think sometimes people focus on beating their team-mate but we need to realise that Chaz has won both races here.

“He won yesterday on the soft tyre, he won today on the hard tyre which is the most concerning as when it comes to SC1 territory, Kawasaki should be the ones winning and today that wasn’t the case. We will keep working to release the potential soon as a Ducati winning on an SC1 tyre is another blow for myself and Kawasaki.

“And me,” added Rea, from the back.
