Irwin expecting to be in the Ulster GP Supersport mix

Motorpoint British Supersport star Glenn Irwin is expecting to be in the Ulster Grand Prix Supersport mix this year even though it is only his second visit to the Dundrod circuit.

Irwin, who will ride his Gearlink Kawasaki 600, said that last year he just cruised around the track but after a strong showing at the North West 200 a few weeks ago, he is ready to challenge for the top step.

“This is only my second appearance at Dundrod, but I see no reason as to why I should not be fighting at the front of the Supersport races. I found the circuit fairly easy to learn and I have had a lot of advice from my father,” said Irwin.

“You know what it’s like, parents are sceptical when their son says he is going to do road racing, but I just find it another ribbon of tarmac the same as a short circuit race and when they see you are determined to compete then they back you to the hilt.

“Last year I just cruised around, but this time I feel I can be on the pace of the top riders. I went to the North West for the first time this year and should have won one of the Supersport races, but for a mistake, so I know I can be up there.

“I know the bike and I’ve already won on it this season, so I’m really comfortable on the 600. Plus the Ulster really suits my style, as I can carry good corner speed and there are some great overtaking positions.”
