‘I’ve closed bigger gaps than that before’ says feisty Haslam

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam believes he is still in the fight for this year’s MCE British Superbike Championship despote having a 27-point deficit to Shane Byrne and says he has closed bigger gaps than before.

The Derby rider crashed out of the second race at Donington Park and could only watch as Byrne took his second win of the day but Haslam says there are still five races left to win.

“I am really looking forward to Assen, especially after Donington. That was my first crash in a race this year and it was just really bad timing with it being a Showdown race. We had a few issues with temperature and that affected our tyre option, so that is something we need to work on again at Assen,” he said.

“Assen is a circuit that usually produces really close racing and I have to go out and do what I usually do, which is to give it my all. Yes, we are down on points compared to before Donington but we have closed a bigger gap than that before and we still have five races to come.

“In the past I have had ups and downs at Assen, but this will be my first BSB race there. In the World Championship I have been on the podium before a couple of times and I am going into next weekend looking forward to trying to get back to winning again at a battling track that should suit me.”
