Jerez WSBK: Davies takes race two victory from Aprilias

Chaz Davies won the second World Superbike race at Jerez ahead of the spirited challenge of Aprilia’s Jordi Torres and Leon Haslam after an eventful race in Spain.

Davies had been sitting patiently behind early pacesetter Tom Sykes but found a way past the Yorkshireman in the middle stages and once he did, the Welshman rode a perfect race to the end to take his fifth victory of the season.

Sykes, as he had in race one, took the lead with a quick start ahead of newly-crowned world champion Jonathan Rea - who in turn made a mistake that allowed Davies and Torres to take place at the head of the hunting pack.

However, as the race wore on Sykes began to experience problems on board the ZX-10R and with Davies fast eating into his advantage the Ducati rider was able to take the lead on lap 11.

Sykes soon went backwards as the Kawasaki became more and more problematic but Davies held firm at the front and began to eke out an advantage over the chasing Aprilias of Torres and Haslam, one he held on to for the remainder of the race as he secured another superb win.

Jonathan Rea took his second fourth place of the weekend, after benefitting from a Michael Van Der Mark crash, while Sykes and Matteo Baiocco rounded out the top six.

Fresh from his exploits at last weekend’s Misano MotoGP, Michele Pirro enjoyed a fine seventh placed finish as he replaces the injured Davide Giuliano at Ducati until the end of the season.

Rounding out the top ten were Leon Camier, who placed eighth to take his best result of the season so far on the MV Agusta, Sylvain Guintoli and Leandro Mercado.

On another disappointing weekend for the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki outfit, Randy De Puniet retired from the race with problems while Alex Lowes initially pitted with a tyre problem, then got a ride through penalty for speeding in pitlane but returned to take 18th at the flag.
