Jerez WSBK test: Rea smashes lap record to lead day four

Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea finished the fourth day of testing at Jerez on top of the combined timesheets, not only outpacing his WorldSBKrivals but also the assembled MotoGP riders too.

Rea was four-tenths under the WSBK pole record held by team-mate Tom Sykes this year and four-tenths quicker than Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies while also outpacing Aspar Ducati’s Alvaro Bautista on his GP16. The Isle of Man resident put in a 1’38.721 compared to Sykes’ 1’39.190 set in Superpole two a few weeks ago.

Davies managed a 1’39.116 to also be inside the existing record and only trailed Bautista by 0.170s. Sykes was third on the WSBK list with 1’39.461, one place behind the Avintia Ducati of Loris Baz. The Huddersfield rider came off of his ZX-10RR in a low-side crash at Aspar Corner. He was okay but the same couldn’t be said for the bike which was bike was brought back to the pits without a front end and it was back tothe drawing board as the team evaluated the cause for the crash.

Hector Barbera, who was the early combined leader before Rea got his head down, ended just ahead of Aleix Espargaro while Marco Melandri has found some more pace today as finished only half a second behind his Aruba Ducati team-mate. The Italian did a number of laps with a large sensor on the rear wheel of his Ducati, to test swingarm flex. Alex Lowes was the next WorldSBK rider along, finishing 13th behind Danilo Petrucci, Karel Abraham, and Scott Redding.

Jack Miller, who is testing the new HRC engine spec, was behind Lowes and two-tenths ahead of KTM test rider Mika Kallio. Leon Camier put the MV in 16th with Michael Van Der Mark 19th and Bradley Smith in 20th. Aprilia MotoGP man Sam Lowes was a full second slower than brother Alex.
