Kneen takes victory in Tandragee 100

Mar-Train Yamaha's Dan Kneen today repeated his success from 2015, winning the feature Around a Pound Tandragee 100 Superbike race this afternoon.

The race was looking like it was to be  a close battle between Kneen, Farquhar and Sheils as they fought some times three a breast in the opening lap but on lap two, the red flags brought proceedings to a halt after what turned out to be a minor incident.

Following a short delay the race was restarted and Kneen powered his R1 straight to to the front comfortably winning the race by six seconds from Sheils and newcomer Malachi Mitchell Thomas continuing to impress in third.

The opening race of the day also saw the Manxman take a win on a Superbike but due to a jump start he and second place Derek Sheils received a one-minute penalty relegating the pair to tenth and eleventh place and promoting Ryan Farquhar to first and William Dunlop making his roads debut on the the MSS Kawasaki second.

That result is still subject to an appeal.

William Dunlop, on his CD-IC Racing Yamaha, started his 2016 Supersport campaign where he left off last year with a win. Kneen and Mitchell Thomas were the early leaders but Dunlop reeled them in eventually snatching the lead on the final lap and taking the chequered flag with a 1.2-second margin. Kneen and Mitchell Thomas completed the podium.

“I really enjoyed the racing today and it was great to get my first wins for Mar-Train, the boys have done a great job with the bikes so it’s nice to repay them so early in the season. I followed Derek in the Open race for a while but knew I could go a bit quicker so had a go and managed to pull away,” said Kneen.

“I haven’t gone well on a 600 for a few years so to run with William today was really positive, it’s the most I’ve enjoyed riding a 600 in a long time. I sat behind the guys in the first run of the grand final and the pace was steady so I knew I could get away on the restart. The main thing was just keeping my concentration after that, fantastic to make it two from two at Tandragee.”

The Supertwin race turned out to be a re-run of Mid-Antrim with Ryan Farquhar and Mitchell Thomas charging ahead of the rest, both riders taking time at the front. Farquhar took the lead in the closing stages of the final lap, Mitchell Thomas made one last try at retaking the lead in the final corner but ran wide allowing Farquhar to nip up the inside and take the win. Sheils finished third making it a double rostrum for John Burrows BE Cookstown team.

Farquhar had his third win of the day on his Kawaski 450 after a close race with Czech rider Michael Dokoupil on a 400 Sam Wilson won the 125 race, Adam Mclean was second and Paul Robinson third.

James Chawke won the junior support race, Joe Newbould the senior class. Ryhys Hardisty took another win on his 250.
