Knockhill BSB: Byrne pleased to make amends in race two

Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne said he was pleased to make up for the disappointment of crashing out of race one by winning the second MCE British Superbike Championship race at Knockhill.

Having qualified on pole position Byrne had some confidence heading into the races but a small crash in morning warm-up was unwelcome and worse was to come.

The four-time champion slid out of race one at the hairpin, losing ground on championship leader Leon Haslam but Byrne refocused on won well in race two, beating JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s James Ellison and Honda’s Dan Linfoot.

After the disappointment of the first race, the Londoner was elated to make up for his error in race two and he said although he got to the front quicker than expected he was able to manage his race well, which paid off in the end.

“It was quite an interesting race, I wasn’t in a mad rush to get to the front,” said Byrne. “Before the start of the race one of my mechanics said to me ‘listen, you’re on the fourth row but it’s a really, really long race – 30 laps – so there’s plenty of time to get to the front, just take your time’ but I got to the front quite quickly.

“I had a go at leading and that didn’t pan out because Leon came back past and was incredibly brave into Turn 1 for a good few laps and then he started to have a few moments going into there too.

"That slowed him off and I then upped my game because I was riding like a bit of a fairy into Turn 1.

“Once I got my stuff together there was plenty of places on the track where I felt I was quicker and I had a little bit in hand but soon I had got to the front and Dan had come in and passed me and then I got past him and thought ‘I’ve really got to push here’.

“I got my head down, but I must have had more moments in those last few laps than the rest of the race – I so badly wanted to win it,” continued the Ducati rider. “I’ve been off twice this weekend, and that’s something I don’t normally do.

“I’m sorry to the PBM Be Wiser Ducati team for that, but to come back and turn it all around with a win is the best I can do so I’m pretty happy about that. It keeps my winning record at Knockhill going too, so that’s nice.”
