Knockhill BSB: Byrne under lap record pace in second practice

PBM Kawasaki's Shane Byrne proved unstoppable during the second MCE British Superbike free practice session at Knockhill, and no other rider was able to match his pace this afternoon.

The quadruple-champ went one tenth under lap record pace, with a super quick 48.186, bettering his earlier free practice time by three tenths of a second. But Byrne still had to contend with charges from his team-mate, local rider, Stuart Easton.

The wee Scotsman also improved on his FP1 time, but was still 0.3s slower than his garage buddy, and when the chequered flag appeared had to settle for second fastest with a 48.497.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Brookes low-sided, going into Taylor's Hairpin while third fastest overall. But he had already done enough to secure P3 this afternoon after a 48.508 rotation.

Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty was gathering pace on his S1000RR and rose up to fourth quickest with a 48.628, going only one tenth slower than Brookes.

Bennetts Suzuki's Christian Iddon's time of a 48.681 was good enough to place him inside the top five. Hickman, Mossey, Kiyonari, Buchan and Westmoreland completed the top ten.

There were a few early incidences out on the track. After only three minutes JG Speedfit Kawasaki's James Ellison, who's still nursing a broken rib injury from the last round at Snetterton, suffered a technical issue, and his bike had to be pushed back to the pits. But after fifteen minutes he was back out on the circuit, and ended the day twelfth fastest.

Honda Racing's Dan Linfoot fell after only five minutes of FP2 at Clark's, but was fortunately uninjured. His team were then in a race against time to get his Fireblade back together, but they managed to get the machine working again with fifteen minutes of the session remaining.

But Linfoot was not the only Honda rider to crash, fresh from his double podium success, Jason O'Halloran fell at Scotsman, but managed to walk away unscathed. Another rider who also fell early doors was Anvil Hire TAG Racing's Richard Cooper. The diminutive rider crashed, also unhurt at Taylor's Hairpin, while eleventh on the sheets.

Be Wiser Kawasaki's Chris Walker crashed out at Clark's with only three minutes left, but was declared OK at the side of the circuit.
