Knockhill BSB: Haslam 'couldn't see' in race two

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam was disappointed not to secure a double MCE British Superbike Championship victory at Knockhill after some race two problems dropped him down the order.

The race one winner began the second contest in fine form, making it through to lead early on and following a battle with team-mate Peter Hickman and Honda’s Dan Linfoot it looked as if he would pull away to victory.

However, despite holding onto the championship lead overall the Derbyshire rider dropped back from first to an eventual sixth and he was disappointed at the race result, if not his overall weekend.

“We’ve extended the Championship lead over this weekend, but for me it should have been a very easy second win,” said Haslam. “With ten to 12 laps to go I couldn’t see anything I dropped nearly three to four seconds a lap at the end, it wasn’t anything to do with the bike it was purely because I couldn’t see.

“I felt good, I felt the pace I had at the front I could have gone quicker at any point but I just couldn’t see.

“I’m feeling pretty confident heading into Snetterton, I have a test in between in Japan but we will take the positives from this weekend.”

Haslam took race one from Linfoot and Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey with an assured display although he said he would have liked the margin of victory to be bigger.

“It’s tough around here, my plan was to make the pass with ten laps to go and try and pull away but as the race was going the lap-times weren’t coming as easy as they had been all weekend,” he said.

“I didn’t want to be in a position where I didn’t have anything left at the end, so I just tried to play it smart but I was probably a little too cautious as Dan ended up pushing me all the way.

“We made it count when we needed to, but I definitely didn’t want to leave it that late but it’s been good all weekend. The boys came up trumps for the dry race.“
