Knockhill BSB: Mossey fastest in second session

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Luke Mossey was the quickest rider in the second MCE British Superbike free practice session at Knockhill, with a 48.221 and went 0.03 seconds under lap record pace too.

The ZX-10RR rider appeared unfazed by the random rain showers which plagued the Scottish track, and was even able to go 0.4s faster than Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne.

But there were a few riders missing from proceedings this afternoon, most notably JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam, Tyco BMW’s Christian Iddon and Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin. The trio were all involved in separate crashes during the first free practice session and have now all be taken to hospital for further medical checks. (More on that story here.)

Elsewhere Byrne was never outside the top five times throughout FP2 and a 48.618 rotation placed him P2 on the sheets, with Isle of Man TT returnee, Josh Brookes setting the third fastest time this afternoon.

The Australian was just one tenth of a second off the best time of Byrne, with Jason O’Halloran just pipping his team-mate to the post on the timing-screens as well. The Honda rider lapped a 48.734 and his team-mate, Dan Linfoot was only a minuscule 0.05s slower, to complete the top five times.

At first it did start to rain just as the bike’s made their way on to the circuit, and it was Mossey who came out of his garage all guns blazing to set the initial fastest time of a 44.483. But the rain shower quickly passed overhead, but with one minute remaining the rain appeared again but only in sectors one and two.

At the flag Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman, McAMS Yamaha’s James Ellison, Moto Rapido Ducati’s John Hopkins, Jakub Smrz and former World Superbike champion Sylvain Guintoli were the top ten finishers after day one.
