Laguna WorldSBK: Davies snatches pole by 0.015s

Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies took his first WorldSBK pole of the year at Laguna Seca with only one lap on the Pirelli qualifiers possible for most riders after Loris Baz crashed at the Corkscrew and brought out yellow flags.

Davies set a 1’22.282 to edge out Captain Superpole Tom Sykes by 0.0015s under the blistering Californian sun while Jonathan Rea admitted to a slight error on his fastest lap which left him on the outside of the front row.

The Welshman became the fifth rider to earn a Superpole award this year. In the current era of rev limits and reduced engine power, compared to previous seasons, Davies’ lap time did not threaten the 1’21.811 Superpole best, set by Sykes, way back in 2014.

Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) placed fourth but was a step behind the leading three in sheer pace with a lap of 1’22.636. Brno race winner Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha) was fifth, and the second Aprilia of Lorenzo Savadori sixth.

The third row of race one will be headed by the perennial top Honda rider, Leon Camier with a mildly resurgent Xavi Fores (Barni Ducati) eighth and Superpole one top qualifier Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha) ninth.

Tenth best time means a tough fourth row start for Marco Melandri with Jordi Torres (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) 11th and crasher Loris Baz (Althea BMW) 12th, after not setting a time at all.

MotoAmerica regular and WorldSBK wildcard Josh Herrin (Attack Yamaha) was 15th, Jake Gagne (Red Bull Honda) 16th and PJ Jacobsen (TripleM Honda) 19th.
