Laguna WSBK: Davies takes charge in second session

Aruba.it Ducati’s Chaz Davies finished the first day of World Superbike action on top at Laguna Seca as the Welshman held off Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea and Honda’s Nicky Hayden in second practice.

Milwaukee BMW’s Josh Brookes was one of the first riders to better his time from the earlier session but soon the whole field was making impressions as proceedings began to take shape.

Davies made his way through to the top of the timesheets in the opening exchanges as he settled into his rhythm.

Posting a 1’23.765, the Welshman hit the front as Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes took second on a 1’23.905, bettering it next time round but not enough to depose Davies.

It stayed that way for a long part of the second practice session, before Jonathan Rea put in a fine effort on the ZX-10R to take first position from Davies with a 1’23.696.

With ten minutes remaining, the Ducati rider returned to the track and began pushing for the time with his first effort – under in the first two sectors – just not enough at the line.

There was no mistake next time for Davies though, as he charged round on the Panigale making it under in each sector to grab top spot by just 0.074s and finish the opening day on a high.

Rea ended the session in a fine second while Honda’s Nicky Hayden swooped late to place third on the Fireblade with a superb lap, missing out on top by 0.244s.

Pata Yamaha’s Alex Lowes suffered a crash midway through the session, which hindered his chances but luckily for the Lincolnshire rider his top time from FP1 was enough to place him fifth, behind Sykes.

Aruba.it Ducati’s Davide Giugliano took sixth as his solid weekend continues, ahead of Althea BMW’s Jordi Torres, Ioda Aprilia’s Lorenzo Savadori, Barni Racing’s Xavi Fores and the second Pata Yamaha of Niccolo Canepa.

Like Lowes, Honda’s Michael Van Der Mark was also one of only four riders unable to better his time in the second session but the Dutchman was less fortunate as he placed 11th and will take part in Superpole 1.

Joining Van Der Mark in the opening qualifying shootout will be Brookes and his team-mate Karel Abraham, Ioda Aprilia’s Alex DeAngelis and MV Agusta’s Leon Camier.
