Laguna WSBK: Dominant Davies does double

Aruba Ducati’s Chaz Davies has taken a dominant double World Superbike win at Laguna Seca today, mirroring his light-to-flag victory from race one to take the chequered flag and the full 50 points in race two.

As in the opening encounter, Davies and his Panigale were never headed as he dived from pole into the Andretti Hairpin in the lead as the Kawasaki pairing of Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea began another 25-lap scrap for the podium spot.

But it wasn’t such good news for Davies’ team-mate Davide Giugliano who had a nasty crash at turn six before the climb up to the Corkscrew as the Italian was launched off his bike and went end over end through the gravel, and was taken to the medical centre.

As Davies did another disappearing act, Sykes held off the attentions of Rea for the full race distance save for a brief exchange of places into the Corkscrew on lap six. As in the first race, Rea looked like he was struggling under brakes and repeatedly ran wide, especially into turn two.

The Kawasaki man lost ground after encountering a backmarker, slipping back to a second behind Sykes’ ZX-10R and he didn’t the pace to pull it all back so had to settle for third place.

Red Devils Aprilia team-mates Jordi Torres and Leon Haslam spent the second half of the race together after the British rider got away with the leaders but Spain’s Torres had the pace to pass Haslam for fourth into turn three on the brakes with three laps left and kept the position to the chequered flag.

Ayrton Badovini bagged sixth place, one ahead of Michael Van Der Mark. Nico Canepa ended in eighth, Tati Mercardo ninth and Leon Camier copied his race one result, taking tenth place.

Alex Lowes retired his Voltcom Suzuki with 17 laps to go after he was involved in a strange incident with reigning champion Sylvain Guintoli. Lowes had gone across the track to pull into pitlane on lap two and the French Pata Honda rider collided with him and fell.

Lowes rolled back out of the pits as Guintoli’s team picked up the bits but after a session of headshaking, Lowes was forced ro retire with more than likely an electronics issue.
