MV Agusta’s Leon Camier put in another astonishing performance to bag fifth place in today’s opening WorldSBK race at the Lausitzring and was only beaten to fourth place by factory Ducati-mounted Marco Melandri by half a second.
Camier, who has a 10km/h top speed deficit, reeled Melandri in hand over fist in the closing laps and was two seconds faster on the final lap. Camier’s last lap was only three-tenths slower than his quickest of the race, set on lap six so a front-row start tomorrow should stand him in good stead.
“Considering our grid position and the laptimes being so close, I wasn’t so confident going into that race. We have a really good setting with the chassis and the electronics are working well so I felt strong early on and managed to make some good passes,” said Camier, speaking at the track.
“I got to the front of the group but the guys had already gone. I kept my rhythm but Lowes was holding on to me very close. I managed to hunt down Melandri and on the last lap got really close but he had made a couple of seconds in the first laps while I was in a battle so I didn’t have enough time to get to him. sure if I had had one more lap I could have passed Melandri as well.”
