Laverty pragmatic as he loses out on Aprilia MotoGP seat

Michael Laverty is disappointed he isn’t going to be able to show his potential on the Gresini Aprilia in MotoGP after the team decided to give Stefan Bradl the seat vacated by Marco Melandri.

MCE British Superbike rider Laverty did ride the Aprilia RS-GP in the blue riband class in Germany, after Melandri departed the team. But now he is feeling frustrated that he only had one race to show what he was capable of, and would have liked the opportunity to have gone to Indianapolis next week. Former Moto2 champ, Bradl will now compete in the remaining nine MotoGP races onboard the second Aprilia Racing Team Gresini bike, alongside Alvaro Bautista.

The Wales-based rider does believe that it is a ‘sensible move’ by the team to bring in Bradl for the remainder of the season, and admitted that his BSB team were not too keen on him taking part in the MotoGP races. Now he doesn’t think a wild-card ride at the British GP at Silverstone will be a possibility.

“It is a sensible move for the team, they needed a ride to finish the year, and they did mention that to me after the last race. It was going to cause problems with my BSB team and I made a commitment to be fighting for the BSB championship,” said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

“It has worked out good for them and he can help them in the development of the bike and it makes complete sense. The only frustration I have is only having one race on someone else’s bike wasn’t enough time to get the best out of myself.

“From a purely selfish point of view it would have been nice to go to Indy and get myself up to the level I was on the PBM bike, and that’s the only disappointing side of it, and it would have caused problems with my team and they weren’t too happy with me doing it.

“So it probably worked out for the best. Doing Silverstone this month would be nice, but I don’t think it is even a possibility.”
