Magny-Cours WSBK: Sofuoglu steals Supersport pole

Kenan Sofuoglu snatched World Supersport pole from PJ Jacobsen in the dying seconds of Superpole Two at Magny-Cours.

The championship leader – who could clinch his fifth WSS title tomorrow – stuck in a hot lap of 1’55.461 on his final lap to depose Jacobsen, who had been the dominant force in both Superpole sessions.

Jacobsen and Gino Rea had been the men on a mission in Superpole One, both managing to set their fast times when it mattered to make it through to the second shoot-out.

Brit Kyle Smith – who had been second quickest in free practice earlier this morning – crashed his CIA Landlord Insurance Honda at Turn One early in the session, wrecking his chance before he’d really started.

As Superpole Two got underway, it was the factory Honda of Jacobsen which was fastest straight out of the box, as Sofuoglu appeared to be playing catch up.

The Turkish rider, aboard his Kawasaki Puccetti Racing machine, was lying in second from the moment he set his first lap, and it was starting to look like American Jacobsen could actually stay on top.

But it was too soon to write-off the four-time champion. On a track which now had a few dry patches scattered about, he had been held up on his penultimate lap but gave it one last shot and it paid off.

Posting a time of 1’55.461, Jacobsen was unable to answer it, as he ended his final quick run just quick enough to secure second.

Ayrton Badovini took the third front row spot on the Team Lorini Honda while Britain’s Rea made a mistake on his final run and was unable to better his fourth quickest time.

He will be joined on the second row by Jules Cluzel on the MV Agusta and the DS Junior Team Kawasaki of Illia Mikhalchik.

Seventh on the grid is Kalio Racing’s Niki Tuuli with Christian Gamarino on the Team GoEleven Kawasaki eighth and the San Carlo Team Italia Kawasakis of Alessandro Zaccone and Axel Bassani ninth and tenth.
