McWilliams ready to spank the Aussies at Phillip Island Classic

Former MotoGP star and all-round fast guy Jeremy McWilliams is ready to give the Australians a second spanking at the Phillip Island Classic this weekend as the British team attempts to retain the Mitchelton Wines International Challenge trophy.

Ulsterman McWilliams is joined by John McGuinness, Ryan Farquhar, Conor Cummins, James Hillier and Aussie-born Glen Richards (whose mum was born in Manchester) in the British team who are determined to beat the home squad again in their own back yard.

"We just loved beating the Aussies,” said McWilliams. However the Ulsterman honestly believed that he and the UK team were never going to beat Australian team in their own back yard, as the riders always seemed to have that little bit extra over them in regards to circuit knowledge, the ability to go testing when the UK team couldn't, not to mention having a very tough line up.

“When we eventually won it was a sweet victory. The whole team, Roger and Pat Winfield were all over the moon. There's always a fair bit of banter between all the teams, but when the flag drops the bull shit stops. The Aussies take this event very seriously, that’s for sure. ‘Gilesy’ is always consistently fast as is Beau (Beaton) and Cam (Donald), so everything has to be right to beat them.”

McWilliams is not under any illusions that it's going to be easy to defend the title. In saying that, the 51-year-old believes the UK strongest team yet, which gives them a lot of confidence but they will run up against some fast Australians, youngster Jed Metcher in particular.

“Jed’s on the top of his game. It was nice to show him the way home in race two. I see he's been out testing already so I guess he means business and like all of us he wants to win the individual honours. I'm really determined to lift the individual honours again after missing out last year.”
