Misano WSBK: Rea bags race-two victory

World Superbike series leader Jonathan Rea returned to the top step of the podium at Misano, winning the second race ahead of Davide Giugliano and Leon Haslam after taking the lead on lap 15 and extending his lead to 133 points.

Rea rectified his mistake with a rear tyre gamble from race one, which saw him finish second to team-mate Tom Sykes, and used the harder-option Pirelli to great effect and extended his lead in the championship.

As in race one, Sykes led the early laps with Giugliano and Rea in close attendance and looked strong until lap seven when the Ducati man went under him and Rea followed him through. This was the end of Sykes podium challenge as he slowed and was also caught and by Haslam and Davies.

After 13 laps, Giugliano had four-tenths of a second in hand as it became a two-horse race for the win. With six laps left, Rea got great drive out of turn 10 and went past the Italian on the entrance to turn 11 and Giugliano had no answer to Rea’s pace eventually crossing the line some 1.3s in arrears.

Haslam looked to have secured the final podium spot but Davies had other idea, closing back down on the Red Devils Aprilia man but just couldn’t make a move stick and Haslam took his second rostrum in as many meetings.

Sykes faded back to fifth place while returning Aprilia superstar Max Biaggi pipped team-mate Jordi Torres to sixth place with a pass on lap 19 of 21. Ducati test rider Michele Pirro finished in eighth place with Sylvain Guintli ninth and Michael Van Der Mark tenth.

Leon Camier ended just outside the points in 16th place while Alex Lowes retired.
