MotoGP Aragon: Binder wins as Bagnaia extends Championship lead

Brad Binder rode perfectly to his second Moto2 win of the year, as Pecco Bagnaia extended his lead atop the World Championship standings with a second place finish.

A surprise pole sitter, Binder took advantage of his perfect starting spot to take the whole shot into the first corner and led in the early stages of the race. The man on the move however, was Alex Marquez.

The Marc VDS rider then took the lead off the South African and set the pace, trying to drop Binder and the chasing pack.  With Marquez leading, Bagnaia moved passed Schrotter and starting closing in on the KTM.

With the World Championship leader now with Binder, the KTM man starting to look nervous and looked to move back past Marquez. After running wide on the final corner and Bagnaia knocking the rear camera off his bike, with six laps to go, Binder took the lead in the downhill turn 12.

With six to go, Binder upped his pace and ultimately went on to win his second race of the year and his Moto2 career by 1.528 seconds.

Despite his best efforts, Bagnaia couldn’t close Binder down and settled for 20 all important points to build his World Championship lead to 19 points, with main title river Miguel Olivera only good enough for seventh place.

Lorenzo Baldassarri managed to pass Alex Marquez on the penultimate lap, with the Spaniard struggling with rear tyre grip in the final laps and disappointed to have to end best of the rest in fourth place.

Marcel Schrotter’s long awaited podium last time out didn’t bring two in two races with the German only capable of fifth position.  Joan Mir was sixth place and just ahead of the disappointed Oliveira whose worst result of the season came at the worst time, with the Portuguese finishing every race before today in the top six.

Mattia Pasini was eighth and just ahead of the MotoGP bound Fabio Quartararo with Jorge Navarro rounding out the top ten. Team Sky VR46’S Luca Marini was eleventh and just ahead of compatriot Simone Corsi. Augustio Fernandez, Iker Lecuona and Tetsuta Nagashima rounded out the point scorers.
