MotoGP Austin: ‘If it happens again, it happens again’ - Redding

Britain’s Scott Redding is not worried about the rear tyre delamination that caused havoc at the Argentine MotoGP round happening again in Austin and hasn’t adjusted his riding style to keep temperatures down.

Redding’s rear Michelin fell to bits at Rio Hondo, prompting mandatory pitstops to change tyres, but the Octo Ducati rider thinks that pressures and temperatures have no effect but the amount of movement does.

“Tyre temperatures have been normal. I think the problem we had in Argentina was not temperature or pressure, I think it was a lot of movement from tyre which separates the rubber from the carcass,” said Redding, speaking at the track.

“You can see in the race when I passed Dani how much the bike was shaking and I had that all weekend. At one point is as to let go. If it goes again, it goes again, I don’t give a fuck, that’s my only option.”

Redding finished fourth on the combined timesheets yesterday and says he can race with the soft rear but will try the medium compound that Michelin are bringing to the track today.

“I have a good feeling like in Argentina, maybe a little bit better. I was a little bit annoyed at the beginning when people were goofing around and I only had three laps on a new tyre, so if that had been my only opportunity it as wasted but we had a chance to go again at the end.

“We tried the other front tyre but it was too hard. The edge grip was good but under braking it was skidding so I didn’t scrub off any speed. We need to see with the medium option front with the rear and see how that works.

“This tyre can do race distance, we did that this morning. There was some graining but that’s normal in the first session, you have to expect that so we will do some laps on the soft and then use the medium rear to see.”
