MotoGP bosses announce massive cash boost for teams

MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta has announced a massive cash boost to the premier class which will see promoters Dorna inject 30 per cent more funds between 2017 and 2021 if proposals are agreed by manufacturers.

As part of the new deal, Dorna will cover the cost of satellite teams to lease bike from the likes of Honda and Yamaha, and manufacturers will also be able to put up to six bikes each on the grid with some bikes going to completely private teams.

“We have put a proposal to which we hope they will all agree for the commercial arrangements from 2017 to 2021. We want all the technical aspects to not change in his period unless everyone agree, this is the most important thing,” said Ezpeleta, speaking at the Argentine race.

“Secondly, we say to the six manufacturers who participate, including KTM, they can participate with two bikes. They then have a obligation to supply a satellite team with two bikes to lease at a fixed price. We will pay practically all the cost of this lease.

“This means the teams will be safe economically and the competitveness of the championship with the same ECU will be sure. Manufacturers can put into the championship a maximum of six bikes.

“The leasing cost we agree with the manufacturer will cover everything except crashes will be practically covered by the money we pay to them. The total amount of money we put into the grid is 30 per cent more than it is today.

“The satellite teams will remain as they are today, we will not accept any more entries from private teams unless we go below 22 riders and the teams will have the right to lease one bike from the manufacturers.”

Ezpeleta also said the number of races in a season will be limited to 20 during the 2017-2021 period. Austria’s Red Bull Ring is due to join next season and Thailand’s Chang circuit could also be included.

“We agree the maximum number of races will be no more than 20. We have many existing agreements until 2016 then after that we will know. For sure next year Austria will enter. We have been with Superbikes in Thailand, the circuit is valid so there is a proposal there. We are open to a proposal from Brazil but we have to have a safe circuit.”
