MotoGP Catalunya: Marquez cruises to Moto2 win

Estrella Galicia’s Alex Marquez cruised to victory in today’s Moto2 race at the Barcelona MotoGP round, opening a 1.3s gap on lap one and extending it to four seconds by lap seven to beat Mugello winner Mattia Pasini by three seconds with championship leader Franco Morbidelli down in sixth.

Marquez put on a riding display with fast and consistent laps, setting a new outright record of 1’49.712 on the second circulation, to leave the fight for second between Pasini and Tom Luthi.

Luthi was pushed off track on lap one and had to fight his way back to a podium spot but he didn’t have enough for Pasini - who used the hard rear Dunlop while all about him were a compound softer – but third place was enough to bring the Swiss to only seven points behind Morbidelli in the points chase.

Rookie Miguel Oliveira took advantage of a mistake from Morbidelli – when he lost but recovered the front – to secure fourth place while Lorenzo Baldassarri scythed his way backwards from the front row but then scrapped through to pass Morbidelli for fifth.

Morbidelli had no reply to the men in front and was also under threat from Jorge Navarro with eight laps to go but was able to up his game enough to keep the Gresini rider behind him even through Navarro had gambled on the hard rear.

Taka Nakagami had Fabio Quartararo for company but kept the youngster behind him until a mistake put him back to 11th. Xavi Vierge leapt up to take ninth with Hafizh Syahrin completing the top ten.

Britain’s Tarran Mackenzie crashed out at turn three on lap four.
