MotoGP Catalunya: Quartararo flies to maiden Moto2 victory

Pole sitter Fabio Quartararo flew to his maiden Moto2 victory converting his very first pole position in the process, with Miguel Oliveira closing the gap at the top of the World Championship to one point.

The 19-year-old came into the World Championship after winning the junior World Championship as a 13-year-old and after failing to impress in the junior categories, the Frenchman had the perfect weekend.

Alex Marquez took the whole shot and the early race leader but the story of the start was all about Miguel Oliveira. Starting in 17th, Oliveira found himself leading the race after 6 laps.

Oliveira looked comfortable on his Red Bull Ajo KTM and went past early race leader Marquez to take the lead. Quartararo could see the pace he had and quickly followed the Portuguese rider through.

Just two laps after making his way up to second, he went past the KTM and was never caught. It was a dominant display as he reminded everyone in the paddock about the young rider who got the rules changed to allow him to join the paddock as a 15-year-old. It was Speed Up’s first win for three years with the last one coming courtesy of Sam Lowes in Texas back in 2015.

Oliveira and Marquez held onto podium finishes and closed in the gap on World Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia who could only finish in eighth position.

Marcel Schrotter was fourth and could’ve challenged for a podium had he not run wide at Turn One swerving to avoid Quartararo in the opening stages of the race. He was just ahead of his team-mate Xavi Vierge making it a Dynavolt 4-5.

Brad Binder was sixth on his KTM with Lorenzo Baldassarri seventh and ahead of Bagnaia. Sam Lowes was forced to start from the back of the grid after failing to make the start and despite the disastrous start Lowes heroically fought though to finisih in ninth position whilst his team-mate Iker Lecuona rounded out the top ten.

Oliveira’s twenty points for second place coupled with Bagnaia’s eight for eighth, it means the top of the World Championship is down to one point between the Italian and the Portuguese rider.
