MotoGP Jerez test: Redding learning to trust RC213V

Britain’s Scott Redding spent yesterday’s Jerez MotoGP test re-learning how to ride his Estrella Galicia RC213V after getting a new chassis for race weekend and says he is now building soe trust with the bike.

The Gloucestershire rider made almost no changes to setup in the test, save for some front spring tweaks, and just put in lap and after lap to adjust to the new chassis, which has moved the weight of the RC213V around.

“We have made a step forward today with consistency, spending a lot of time in the 1’39s and 1’40s. Over the weekend we did one or two 1’39s, so my pace was a lot quicker. I’m getting more comfortable on the bike, handlebar position, tank position as moving the weight on these bikes make such a big difference,” said Redding, speaking at the track.

“I didn’t realise that. It is something that Chris (Pike, crew chief) has been stressing but I kind of brushed it off so today it went out, did 20 laps to figure it out and that’s all we have been doing.

“We changed a bit of fork spring here and there but it didn;t make any difference, so it was mainly me working on the bike and finding the lap time. I’m learning to control and trust the bike as I didn’t really trust it.

“With this bike, the harder you push, the better it gets and it’ hard to understand that. It’s strange. In the past, the more you spin, the more you lose but now you go faster. We were trying to figure out the best way to ride.

“I now have a lot more confidence and a bit better feel. Having less power on the Open bike with the soft tyre was easier to get to the limit but with this thing, even little things make a difference. You are riding against the best of the best.

“You feel on the limit but that is your outlap, the limit is so much higher and we are just getting to it. You’re doing 160mph and you’re trusting a patch that is smaller than credit card, it’s hard to accept. Building that confidence makes you faster.”
