MotoGP Le Mans: Lorenzo dominates third practice

Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo dominated the final MotoGP free practice session at Le Mans this morning, upping his pace by a second from yesterday afternoon to set the quickest time of the weekend so far despite cool track temperatures.

The Spaniard, who was untouchable at Jerez last time out, set a 1’32.647 on his softest-available tyre after putting in a set of long runs to judge race pace for tomorrow grand prix.

Lorenzo’s best was 0.371 faster than Ducati’s Andrea Iannone who used the absolute softest tyre to put in a 1’33.018 on his last run for second place while Britain’s Cal Crutchlow stormed into third place on his final circuit and ended 0.479 behind Lorenzo.

Andrea Dovizoso, on the second works GP15, stuck in his best lap early doors using the turquoise-banded super-soft rear and it was enough to push Bradley Smith, who didn’t improve on his time from yesterday, down into fifth on the combined timesheets.

Reigning champion Marc Marquez, who is using the new swingarm he tested at Jerez, ended in sixth place but ran off track three times in the session. Dani Pedrosa, who is returning from invasive arm-pump surgery, leapt from ninth to seventh place with his last lap to end just under a second off the pace.

Yonny Hernandez continues to impress on the satellite Pramac Ducati, setting a 1’33.646 to jump ahead of Valentino Rossi on the combined sheets as The Doctor didn’t find any extra pace this morning, setting a 1’33.782 as his quickest of the session.

Monster Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro just snuck into qualifying two with his last effort and his time of 1’33.694 was enough to shuffle Maverick Vinales’ Ecstar Suzuki back into 11th and the young Spaniard will have to go through qualifying one.

Aleix Espargaro suffered a whopping highside halfway through the session and although the Spaniard went back to his garage, he then travelled to the medical centre for checks and x-rays on his right hand. If he is fit, he will have to go through qualifying one as his time from yesterday was only enough for 12th.

Scott Redding continues to struggle with front-end grip and although he found three-tenths overnight, he was still only fast enough for 14th, one place ahead of Jack Miller on the Open class Honda. Eugene Laverty is not having much fun and is in 23rd.
