MotoGP Motegi: I couldn’t push like in Thailand – Vinales

Maverick Vinales admitted that he couldn’t push his factory Yamaha MotoGP machine like he could in Buriram as he qualified down on the third row of the grid.

Vinales enjoyed a productive Friday and said that he thinks the changes Yamaha made in Thailand were here for good and not a one off, however, after a less than productive qualifying session which was him only manage seventh place and over half a second off the pole time, the Spaniard admitted he couldn’t turn as he wanted and just kept running wide.

“In Buriram I could stop much more in the beginning of the braking, which meant I could enter faster in the corner with more banking,” said the 23-year-old who finished on the podium last time out.

“Today was impossible to use the tyres. I just ran wide and wide and wide. I couldn't push like in Thailand. In Thailand I could ride more, like one metre inside, one metre outside, trying to find the better line. Here I have only one line and I need to follow it.”

Despite that, Vinales tried to remain optimistic and said that they know what areas they now need to work on, so they will work hard over night to try and find the missing pieces to fight for the podium tomorrow.

"After yesterday I was expecting more and a front-row start was possible,” he said.

“But we got worse on the braking, so that's what we need to work on tomorrow. Tonight we will have a look to see where we are losing in terms of braking power compared to yesterday, and we'll see if we can improve it.

“I don't know what to expect for tomorrow's  race. I hope to be at the front, which I should be able to fight for if we improve the braking.”
