MotoGP Motegi: Rodrigo beats McPhee for Moto3 pole

Gabriel Rodrigo claimed his third career pole position as he beat out Scotsman John McPhee by just 0.075 seconds in Moto3 qualifying around the Twin Ring Motegi.

The Argentine rider went top the top of the session with around twelve minute left on his KTM, taking the top spot off of Marco Bezzecchi who had led for the majorty of the session. Nobody could improve until the chequered flag came out.

With the flag out, Bastianini took the pole spot from the RBA rider, but the Leopard man only held the top spot for a matter of seconds when World Championship leader and qualifying maestro Jorge Martin went fastest with a 1:57.118.

It wasn’t to be another Martin weekend however, as seconds later Rodrigo came and took the pole position back away from the Spaniard. Rodrigo’s 1:56.894 would go unbeaten and he claimed his first pole position of 2018.

Behind the Argentine, Bezzecchi looked as if he would be starting from the middle of the second row when an extremely late lap from McPhee saw the World Championship challenger knocked down to the outside of the front row.

Martin’s best time was only good enough for fourth, although he will be happy to be only one spot behind his biggest title rival.

Darryn Binder will start from the middle of the second row in fifth position on his Red Bull KTM one spot ahead of Bastianini. Dennis Foggia will head the third row of the grid and will be just ahead of Kazuki Masaki and Albert Arenas.
