MotoGP Mugello: Moto3 pole for Kent in Italy

Britain’s Danny Kent stormed to Moto3 pole position this afternoon at Mugello’s MotoGP round, waiting in his garage until the dying moments to go out and put in one fast lap which was enough to top the timesheets.

Kent appeared on track with six minutes left to go, following team-mates Efren Vasquez and Hiroki Ono up pitlane, but didn’t use them for a slipstream, striking out on his own to put in the fastest ever Moto3 lap at the Italian circuit of 1’56.615.

He had a 0.704s gap to Romano Fenati in second place until Ono found some pace with his final lap and a slipstream from Nico Antonelli up the start/finish straight saw him cut the gap to Kent, ending on 1 ’56.904.

Fenati’s last lap was looking good enough for second place but he was held up by dawdling riders halfway around and he had to abort, waving his arms in the process and giving race director Mike Webb cause to hand out more penalty points.

Serial crasher Karel Hanika bagged fourth place and is just 0.010s behind Fenati with Antonelli and Jakub Cornfeil completing the second row. Oban rider John McPhee finished down in 19th place.
