MotoGP Mugello: Pole for Lowes despite crash

Britain’s Sam Lowes picked himself up from an early crash in this afternoon’s Moto2 qualifying session to bag pole position by more than three-tenths of a second for tomorrow’s race at the Mugello MotoGP round.

The Speed Up rider slipped off with 30 minutes left to run and had to push and paddle all the way back to the pitlane. After a change of bodywork and gloves, Lowes went straight back out and put in a 1’51.514 to depose Swiss Dominic Aegerter from top spot and grab the circuit best lap for the class.

Aegerter has found some speed and feel with the Kalex chassis that has been missing this year and he had topped the session with a 1’51.856 until Lowes put in his sheet-topper.

Reigning champion Tito Rabat elbowed his way on to the front row with his last fast lap, putting in a 1’51.874 to push Thomas Luthi on to row two. Luis Salom jumped into fifth place late on and championship leader Johann Zarco completes the top six.
