MotoGP Phillip Island: 'I should've went with my gut instinct' says Crutchlow

Cal Crutchlow has admitted he should’ve went with his gut instinct and went straight out on slicks in today’s second MotoGP qualifying session at Phillip Island.

The Brit will line up in second position on the grid for tomorrow’s race, but reckons he could’ve taken pole had he just gone with his initial feeling after the first session.

“We’re a little bit disappointed with the result, I felt we could’ve maybe stolen the pole today if I was clever enough,” he said. “Normally I’m the guy to put the slicks on first and I should’ve gone with my gut instinct because after Q1 I said immediately ‘let’s go with the slicks’

“But then I changed my mind and it was the wrong decision to do so. In the end I lost a little bit of time, but I felt I did a good job with the front tyre that I had. I just lost a little bit of time, got held up and we finished second.”

The LCR Honda man finished up seven tenths of a second down on new champ Marc Marquez, after being forced to battle it out in the first qualifying session – something he again puts down to wrong tyre choice.

“At the end of the day Marc did a great lap. It’s been tricky conditions all weekend with me going through to Q1 I had the extra little bit of experience with the rain, or the half wet, half dry.

“But we shouldn’t have gone to the Q1 anyway, this was a bit of a nightmare situation, I chose the wrong tyres at the wrong time in FP3 but I think my team did a good job this weekend, we have to look forward to tomorrow, it could be a complete lottery again and hopefully the fans will get to see some good racing.”

Despite his clear annoyance at himself for going the wrong way on tyre choice, he is happy with his pace.

“I was quite surprised at the lap times we were able to do with the wet tyre, and then in the dry I was quite surprised with the lap times I could do then, considering the track is dirty, there’s no rubber on the track as such, just a load of crashed fairing bits all over the place.

“I think it’s going to be a long race tomorrow. I think the lap times we did in qualifying are possible to do at the end of the race, it’s just if we can get this 30 minutes in the morning at a decent temperature and be able to work out our settings then it’ll be a lot better for everyone, a lot safer and hopefully bring a good, close race.”
