MotoGP Qatar: 'Big changes' needed for Yamaha's Vinales

Movistar Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales will today push for a different direction in setup on his works YZR-M1 after a poor start to the 2018 MotoGP season in Qatar.

Vinales admitted earlier this week there were still electronic problems to solve but after second practice, where he ended in 12th place, the Spaniard was thinking much bigger as the same issues are still holding him back.

“It was more like the test, you know, as at the test it was also very difficult so I didn’t expect anything better. We have to continue working and develop a little bit more with the bike as I didn’t feel well with the bike.

“It is completely the same, honestly, we know the areas which don’t feel well so we have to continue working. We lost a lot of rear grip so it also didn’t help with the front. We will have to make a big change for tomorrow and try some new directions.”

Vinales is also exasperated with being asked which chassis he is using. It is a 2016 with modifications, so that makes it a 2018 as it’s different than the 2017. Both of them…

“I am using the 2016 and obviously with a small modification so it is very similar to the 2017. I don’t think the problem is with the chassis, it is with the electronics. There is a lot to do and also we have to increase the rear grip which is very important especially for the race distance.

“I tried my best and I try to help by being very gentle with the bike to make sure it doesn’t get into a lot of trouble. I am much smoother than last year because last year I was more aggressive and pushing the bike more. Honestly, we have to improve a lot with the bike.”
