MotoGP Qatar: Capirossi admits ‘no drainage’ is the problem

MotoGP safety chief Loris Capirossi had admitted that today’s problems at the Qatar MotoGP round are down to the fact the track has no drainage as the amount of water that fell out of the sky is not expected.

Capirossi took part in several inspections but standing water on the track, especially at turn one and four, and a lake in the gravel at turn eight made it impossible for qualifying to run safely.

“We tried to do the practice tonight and we thinking we could resolve the problems but in the end we understand the problem is bigger and we decide to cancel everything. The main problem of the track is no drainage because normally we don’t expect rain in Qatar,” said the Italian, speaking at the track.

“We discover during the Moto2 and Moto3 test, and today, the condition. For sure we are thinking to do some work for next season but until now the situation is like this. For tomorrow, we decide to increase the warm-up for all three classes and we hope to have good weather.

“Tonight we will continue working and resolve the problem as much as we can, and we decide that tomorrow we need to continue working to have the best situation we can for late afternoon and night.

“In the run off area at turn eight, there was nearly a lake. The problem without drainage is the water comes up from underground. We try to take off the water with a pump, we think it is good but after ten minutes it is again the same. This is why we are still working now.”

The circuit will put in some pumps in the bad areas overnight and Capirossi hopes that even if it rains some more tonight, the track will be in good enough condition.

Capirossi also said that the race could be run on Monday if the weather doesn’t get any better as it was in 2009.
