MotoGP Qatar: Rain forces qualifying cancellation, Vinales on pole

MotoGP bosses have been forced to cancel all of today’s qualifying sessions as there is too much standing water on the circuit following huge downpours in Qatar today.

Safety delegates Loris Capirossi and Franco Uncini have undertaken several inspections but a lake of water in the gravel at turn eight and a lot of standing water in other places mean it is too dangerous to ride.

A statement reads: “After overnight rain, a storm and too much standing water on track at Losail International Circuit, the original timetable for Saturday at the Qatar GP saw some adjustments before the decision was taken by Race Direction to cancel track action for the day.

“Track conditions were deemed too dangerous to enable riders to get out on track – and with little chance of improvement as rain and lightning began again.”

All grid positions will be taken from the final free practice positions so Maverick Vinales will take pole, with Andrea Iannone and Marc Marquez beside him. Johann Zarco, Andrea Dovizioso and Scott Redding will make up row two.

There will be an extra ten minutes added to morning warm-up.

Franco Morbidelli, Alex Marquez and Danny Kent form the Moto2 front row while Jorge Martin, Romano Fenati and Philipp Oettl are the Moto3 quickest men.
