MotoGP Sepang test: Marquez smashes outright lap record

Reigning MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has set the fastest ever lap of the Sepang circuit on day three of testing and became the first rider to go under the 1’59s second barrier with a 1’58.867, set in his first run.

The Repsol Honda man was three-quarters of a second faster than his previous best of 1’59.533 and was almost a second ahead of the field until team-mate Dani Pedrosa also put his personal best lap at the track with a 1’59.006.

“I think everybody did an incredible laptime this morning but 1’58 to see on the dashboard made me excited. For one lap we were very strong and on the race simulation I felt really good as we went out when there is temperature on the track and it was good,” said Marquez, speaking at Sepang.

“I saw it was cloudy, it was the right temperature and the track was faster than usual as we didn’t have any rain. I was really happy but I have to stop in the box as I had to cool down.

“We tried many things on the electronics during that to understand well and we get a lot of important information. Of course we had some problems, but we did it for this. We have a good potential to fight.

“It was the first simulation with the new bike and we saw some things with the front but we know we can improve this. We must work on the rear where he have more problems and the character of the engine. But the point is, even like that, we are the same if not better than 2014.”
