MotoGP Silverstone: 'I am not strong enough' - Rossi

Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi was nearly one second slower his team-mate, Jorge Lorenzo in the second MotoGP free practice outing at Silverstone, and ended the afternoon tenth fastest on the timing screens, and for the Doctor he was simply not strong enough.

The multiple champ struggled with the rear tyre and tried to change the bike to make him consistent, but his crew didn’t find anything that worked. Rossi did improve from his FP1 time by six tenths of a second, but couldn’t manage to reach the 2’02’s like Lorenzo, Marquez and Smith today.

But the Yamaha man is not worrying too much, as if the weather is bad tomorrow he has already set a time that that is tenth quickest which could put him through to Q2. But he will work hard on getting faster and stronger, and to improve on his engine braking in particular.

“It was difficult this afternoon. I need to be stronger, especially after the practice this morning. We found some good improvements and my lap time were not too far from the top. But we suffered a lot with the rear tyre and we worked on that in the afternoon and changed a bit of the setting on the bike to try and be more constant - but unfortunately we didn’t find anything very good,” said Rossi at the track.

“I am not strong enough, I am not fast enough, we need to continue more like this morning’s [session]. I lost a lot of positions as I was concentrating a lot on the lap times and some of the guys put the softer tyre in at the end as they wanted to stay in the top ten because of the risk of rain in the morning, but I concentrated more on pace but it is not a disaster as I am in the top ten. If they are bad conditions like rain tomorrow, then I am in Q2, and that is important.

“We will try a lot of different things and we will try tomorrow to be stronger. We worked a lot with engine break because we want to improve in some areas but we didn’t find a right way to go faster in the corners and the soft tyre which is suppose to be the race tyre is good at the beginning but after some laps I suffer with speed - so this is the main problem, trying to fix the tyre and to try to improve it for the race.”
