MotoGP Silverstone: McPhee aims to stay in Moto3 for 2016

Britain’s John McPhee came away with some valuable points during the Moto3 race in wet conditions at Silverstone, after crossing the finishing line in sixth, but the future still remains uncertain for the wee Scot.

McPhee was hoping to have been a regular podium finisher, and to be dicing with the front-runners in the class this year, but his team have had some difficulties and he found himself further down the standings than he thought he would be. His initial plan was to do well in Moto3 in 2015 with a chance to moving up to Moto2.

But with everything in racing funding is important, and the Scot is not sure what his plans are for 2016. Realistically it would appear that staying in Moto3 for another season looks like the reasonable option. McPhee would like the chance to contest for the championship, like fellow Brit Danny Kent is doing this year and that is his main goal.

“At the minute [the future] is something that we are not too sure about. We are trying to see what is available, obviously funding is a massive part of it,” said McPhee, talking to bikesportnews.com from the track.

“We are trying to find any backing that we can. It doesn’t matter if you are a front runner, or a back runner nearly everyone needs to bring money from somewhere, so we are obviously looking for some funding, and that is going to depend on what team we are with.

“But I do believe if we have a good package underneath me, a good bike and team we can run at the front week in week out and that has to be the goal for 2016. My plan this year was to be running in the front and a regular podium finisher and then we could be looking towards Moto2 next year, but the fact that that’s not happened as we have had a difficult year - I still believe that we can be a front runner and I want to do that next year and show people what we are capable of.

“The high was definitely standing on the podium this year, but I thought I would be there more often which is a bit of a low for me, as we have been unfortunate this year in the races.”
