MotoGP Valencia: Oncu makes history as youngest-ever GP winner

Can Oncu made history today as the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner at just 15 years and 115 days of age, after a stunning display around the sodden Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.

Starting from the front of the second row, Oncu got a good start, although found himself behind pole sitter Tony Arbolino and Marco Bezzecchi. The front three were opening a small gap up to the chasing pack after just three laps.

However, after four laps, Bezzecchi crashed out of second position, promoting the young Turk up into second, leaving Arbolino and Oncu.

With many riders crashing out, it quickly became a race of attrition as both Arbolino and Oncu continued to put more time into the field. Slowly closing the gap down to Arbolino, Oncu must’ve started thinking about a win.

His life was made that much easier, when on lap 12 Arbolino crashed out of the lead, leaving him in the lead and with a six second lead in his pocket.

With laps ticking down and the lead still increasing, the Red Bull Ajo KTM pit wall were trying everything to get the teenager to slow down and bring it home safely, including getting twin brother Max, on the pit wall asking him to slow down.

Oncu started to slow down, however the drama wasn’t over just yet, when on the final lap exiting turn six, the 15-year-old nearly catapulted himself over the front of his KTM with a huge moment.

Thankfully Oncu managed to bring it home in one piece, becoming the first man to win on his Grand Prix debut since Noboru Ueda who did so back in Japan in 1991.

Oncu was joined on the podium by 2018 Moto3 World Champion Jorge Martin, who bows out of the Moto3 class with a second place finish, ahead of Scot John McPhee who found himself on the podium for the first time since the Sachsenring.

Fabio Di Giannantonio settled for fourth position, knowing that, coupled with Bezzecchi’s crash was enough for the Italian to secure second place in the Moto3 World Championship, making it a Gresini 1-2 in the World Championship.

Enea Bastianini rounded out his Moto3 career with a fifth position, ahead of rookie of the year Jaume Masia. Nico Antonelli was seventh with Nakarin Atiratphuvapat eighth. Marcos Ramirez and Celestino Vietti rounded out the top ten in ninth and tenth respectively.

Oncu surpassed the record of Scott Redding, who won the British 125GP at Donington Park aged 15 years and 170 days in 2008.
