MotoGP Valencia: We improved quite a lot in the wet - Vinales

Australian MotoGP race winner Maverick Vinales said that he improved a lot after a raining first day of free practice in Valencia.

The Spaniard ended the final Friday of 2018 seventh fastest, just under a second and a half behind pace setter Pramac Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci.

Vinales described his first ten minutes of FP1 was a nightmare, but was happy with the progress he made through the day.

“The first ten minutes of FP1 was like a nightmare,” said the 23-year-old.

“I couldn’t even stay on the bike but we improved quite a lot in the wet. I’m actually really happy that the bike is working better and I feel we can still do another great step forward.

“So let’s see if tomorrow I can ride faster but I feel good in the wet and that’s something really important.”

Today also saw the 2019 MotoGP Provisional Entry List come out. Whilst no major surprises on there, the one surprise was seeing the factory Yamaha man was changing his number from 25 to 12 next year.

Running 25 his entire Grand Prix career, Vinales said he wanted to change to a number he ran when he was much younger for a fresh start.

“When I was just a kid, I was riding with 12 always I went between 12 and 100. 100 when I was in motocross, but it was 12,” he said.

“It has been many years that I wanted to change but I never found the way to do it. But now I felt I need to do something different. Next year there is going to be a new engine, new crew chief, new everything so it was the time to change, new Maverick.

“It was the two worst years for me in the world championship so I want to change everything. I just try to go back when I was so good.”
