Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM) nailed a dominant win in today’s MX2 qualification race at the MXGP of Germany at Teutschenthal, round eight of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The Spanish teenager holeshot the 20-minute plus two lap race and checked out to take his fourth qualification win of the season by over 11 seconds ahead of his team-mate and defending champion Pauls Jonass.

With gate choice for tomorrow’s points-paying pair of motos decided by the quali race result, Prado – who’s currently trailing Latvian Jonass by 22 points – did a disappearing act on the spectacular hard-pack track that features multiple changes in elevation.

“It was a good quali race,” he said. “I had a good start and then I was a bit careful for the first laps because it was slippery but I rode good so I’m happy. The track’s nice and I like it. It’s fun so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

After losing the tow on his team-mate, Jonass – who’s going for back-to-back world titles – settled for a safe second on the slick and stony circuit.

Behind them a four-way fight for third played out with South African Calvin Vlaanderen (Team HRC) chasing Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) ahead of Britain’s Ben Watson (Kemea Yamaha) and Dane Thomas Kjer Olsen (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna).

Vlaanderen took third in the early laps from the American and then Olsen moved ahead of Watson just after half-distance and set off after his team-mate. With two laps to go Vlaanderen wasn’t able to pull clear from Covington who was then ambushed as Olsen jumped through into fourth.

Watson came home sixth, just over half-a-second further back, ahead of Australian Jed Beaton (F&H Kawasaki) and Italy’s Samuele Bernadini (Factory Racing TM). Despite a fall, British-born Kiwi Dylan Walsh – who’s contesting the EMX250 class this season –  was ninth in a wild-card ride from Simone Furlotti (SM Action Yamaha).
