No strategy change for Rea as fourth WorldSBK title beckons

Reigning WorldSBK Champion Jonathan Rea will not change his race strategy as a fourth straight title beckons as the Brno tangle with Tom Sykes taught him not to get tangled up in the pack.

Rea has a 92-point lead over Chaz Davies with eight races left to run but won’t be thinking about just scoring points as he learned a valuable lesson at Jerez in 2015

“I have done that before. In 2015 after the summer break, I only had to win one I think and I had my worst results of the year. I don’t want to think about winning the title, I want to treat it race by race but of course there is a big picture, and it is big. It’s important not to be a hero for a day,” said Rea, speaking to bikesportnews.com.

And the Kawasaki rider will not be holding back when it comes to carving through the pack in race two as that has also caught him out this year.

“No, absolutely not. What happened in Brno in race two with Tom and I coming together was me putting myself in that position. We had so much pace to win that race coming through but by not applying the usual strategy, I found myself riding back in seventh place and I shouldn’t have been there.

“Generally, when I see a pass I take it and when I start doing a different strategy, it doesn’t work. It is really important to be on the front row and try to win race one. Race two is almost try and do the best you can, manage the best you can and if it’s a win, great. It’s hard to do that from the third row.

“With a 92-point lead, the most important things to do are stay healthy and make no mistakes. It’s my championship to lose, I guess.”
